In August 2017, Charlottesville experienced a public protest marked by violence and hatred that resulted in the death of one woman, injuries to dozens of peaceful protesters and emotional trauma to untold numbers of residents.

Sadly, the “Unite the Right” rally was only the most prominent manifestation of white supremacy and racial oppression in this historic city.

The Rev. Patricia Jones Turner, a minister and retired social worker who was raised at Trinity, created the White Feather Historical & Educational Project to inspire cultural responses to historical oppression and its harmful implications.
The White Feather Project focuses on ethics and civic engagement in communities, emphasizing the shared values, responsibilities and actions that guide how people participate in public life in ways that promote fairness, trust and the common good.

Trinity hosts an ongoing series of White Feather Project workshops, film screenings, public discussions and other events that address privilege, power and control, as well as topics related to discrimination, including the impact of desegregation.
